AmbientMarker

Usage

AmbientMarker is a small dot on something the person already uses: a nav item, a tab, an icon button or a row title. It says "something here changed or needs a look" and nothing more. It never interrupts: it is not a live region, it never pulses, and in the default placement it takes no space in the line. The full message always lives on an inbox entry, a banner or a toast; the marker points at the place.
Tone follows severity
Pass the effect's severity. There is no colour prop, and red belongs to S5 only.

Placement
  • Corner (default) puts the dot on the inline-end corner of an icon button, a tab or a nav label. It takes no space.
  • End puts the dot after the text in the line, for a title that can clip. The dot stays in view when the text is cut.
When not to use it
  • Beside a Counter. The count is the signal; leave the marker off.
  • On an avatar. The avatar corner is the presence dot.
  • As an unread dot on an inbox row. NotificationItem shows unread through contrast and its accessible name.
  • For a watched subject that needs a surface treatment. Use Highlight.
