The wash reinforces with colour; the 4px bar is a shape cue that does not depend on colour. Body and subtle text keep at least 4.5:1 on every wash in light and dark, and the bar clears 3:1 against the surface. The wash and bar fade in once; under reduced motion they appear at once. In forced-colors mode the wash is dropped and the bar is drawn in a system colour, and in right-to-left languages the bar moves to the right edge.
